How to Get Rid of Stains from White Sofas

Written by Lucy Odimegwu

To get rid of stains from a white sofa, first vacuum the area to remove loose dirt. Then, blot the stain with a clean cloth, never scrub, and apply a cleaning solution like a mixture of dish soap and water, or a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water. For tougher stains, a paste of baking soda and water can be applied before cleaning, or a commercial upholstery cleaner can be used.

General cleaning steps

  1. Vacuum first: Use a brush attachment to vacuum the entire sofa to remove any surface dirt and dust.
  2. Blot, don’t rub: Use a clean, white cloth or paper towel to blot the stain. Avoid rubbing, as this can push the stain deeper into the fabric.
  3. Air dry: Allow the area to air dry completely.

DIY cleaning solutions

  • Dish soap and water: Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with water and apply with a cloth, then blot the stain, rinse with a clean, damp cloth, and blot dry.
  • White vinegar and water: Mix equal parts white vinegar and water. Apply the solution, blot the stain, and allow it to air dry.
  • Baking soda: For lingering or stubborn stains, sprinkle baking soda on the area to absorb the stain. Let it sit, then vacuum it up. You can also create a paste with baking soda and water, apply it to the stain, let it dry for 15-30 minutes, then wipe it off with a damp cloth
